We have no DOT program in place and need to get one started. Is this easy for us to understand as we will are pretty new to this?

It depends on the state you’re working in. Under 26,000lbs GCWR you do not need a CDL, however if the powered unit you operate weights more than 10,000lbs you need a CDL. If your state requires you to have a DOT number then you have to run logs.

No, he only needs the CDL. He would only need the DOT requirements if he was driving for hire. In other words hauling freight or passengers for hire. Just to drive a truck all you need is the CDL.

just in case someone who does not know better reads this, he is totally incorrect. whether you have a cdl or not does not have a thing to do with hours of service. if you are participating in inter/intrastate commerce (with exceptions only for specific states) you DO have to be compliant with all hours of service regs set forth by the fmcsa, which means gvwr has absolutely no effect on whether you must keep a log book or not. heres a good rule of thumb, is there a dot/mc number on the truck? if yes then you better have some sort of approved log system in there if you are over 100 mi from your home terminal.
